The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP)
The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) is a prominent initiative that includes the recruitment of highly talented scholars as new academics in high-demand but understaffed disciplines at South African universities. nGAP is a flagship initiative of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). nGAP academics are recruited based on well-structured and balanced equality concerns, as well as the disciplinary areas of highest need in the higher education system. The nGAP is now the most extensive program under the Staffing South Africa Universities Framework (SSAUF), a university staff development component of the University Capacity Development Programme (UCDP).
The nGAP enables you to study for a master’s or doctorate or to understand post-doctoral work with substantially reduced teaching responsibilities while studying or doing research. It enables you to develop your teaching and research ability, ensures that you are fully supported by a mentor for the duration of your participation in the development programme and provides support for international mobility
How does the nGAP work

To assist with staffing transformation and capacity needs at South African universities through the establishment of permanent academic posts.
To enable young scholars to immediately take up a permanent lecturer position and earn a full lecturer salary while working towards their doctoral degree or doing research.
Who can apply to become an nGAP lecturer?
- Show interest in becoming an academic
- Be 40 years or younger
- Show evidence of eligibility to undertake postgraduate study at doctoral level if you do not have a doctoral degree (PhD)
